The bottom girl is way better looking.

Older hens, like the bottom hen, produce more kids in a season than younger females. The hen on the bottom shows her age with gray on her head and neck.

She will nest earlier, lay more eggs, is more likely to renest if her nest is destroyed, and probably is a better brood mom.

Birds are not mammals – it is exceptionally rare for birds to get so old that reproductive performance drops, certainly not like large mammals.
