About to Depart

Mid-June is upon us and that means these guys are leaving. Male Canvasbacks depart for molting areas earlier than most other male ducks.

Canvasbacks are early nesters and not strong renesters, so there is little benefit to males for staying at parkland nesting sites like Minnedosa past mid-June.

Males go north to undergo the wing molt at large wetlands with an abundance of food. Females are left to incubate and care for young for up to another two months.
